MANCHESTER, ENGLAND – In the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League defending champions Manchester City went through against Serie A big dogs Inter Milan but it was a let-off in the football world. That match is always a cynical affair between two sides that served up one of the best finals in recent years Manchester City vs Inter Milan with City sneaking it 1-0.
Both teams walked into this match with a reputation. Manchester City, managed by Pep Guardiola were developing into one of the premier European teams. Blessed by lovely attacking football and tactical brilliance under the tutelage of a prolific Erling Haaland, Manchester City was one of those teams that other squads were jealous off.
Although Inter Milan would eventually come from behind to put an end to this incredible route in last season’s final, coach Simone Inzaghi has built up a very experienced collection of players that can cancel out the best. At minimum, they have a lot of man going forward — between Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku. The match, in itself was indeed everything it had been billed as. Manchester City began as you would expect—high-pressing and in the ascendency possession-wise with Haaland a thorn all games, making plenty of threats but failing to score. Inter, however, were resilient in their defending and they looked dangerous on the counter.
It arrived on the stroke of half time, a majestic through ball from Kevin De Bruyne leaving Haaland to brush Eder Militao aside in the area. The Norwegian forward made no mistake and slotted the ball home calmly past the Inter keeper to give City the lead. Inter then raised the tempo, but City stood firm at the back to maintain their advantage.
